Someone in California opens a laptop, searches "send flowers to Manhattan," and lands on a website with a photo of premium red roses. They enter a Manhattan zip code, pay $125, and believe they've just hired a New York florist to deliver something beautiful to someone they love. They have not. What they've actually done is place an order with a national call center that will now shop that order around to a stranger's flower shop somewhere near the delivery address, for a fraction of what they paid. Here is what actually happens between that click and the doorbell ringing.
How Wire Services Actually Work
The process behind almost every big-name flower delivery website follows the same basic script, whether the name on the homepage is 1-800-Flowers, FTD, ProFlowers, or Teleflora:
- The customer places an order on the wire service's website, believing they are ordering directly from a florist
- That order is routed electronically to whatever fulfillment florist the wire service has under contract in the delivery zip code
- The local florist receives a "wire order" — the customer's request, plus a capped payout the wire service is willing to pass along
- The local florist is expected to build the arrangement using whatever inventory they happen to have on hand that day, substituting where necessary
- The local florist typically keeps somewhere between 27% and 40% of what the customer actually paid, after wire fees, transmission charges, and clearinghouse commissions are taken out
- The local florist has a window of two to six hours to build and deliver the order, or reject it back into the system
None of this appears anywhere on the checkout page. The customer sees a photo and a price. Everything after that is invisible to them.
The Substitution Problem
Every wire service order comes with some version of the same disclaimer: substitutions may occur if specific flowers are unavailable. In practice, this clause does a lot of work. If the customer ordered white lilies and pink roses, and the florist who picked up that wire order happens to be out of white lilies that day, they substitute — with whatever they consider "comparable." The website photo, at that point, becomes fiction. It was never a picture of what would arrive. It was a picture of what a photographer arranged once, in a studio, for a catalog. The customer believes they sent exactly what they saw on screen. The recipient opens the door to something else entirely, chosen by a shop the customer never picked, on a budget the customer never saw.
The "Same-Day" Illusion
"Same-day delivery" sounds like a promise. On a wire service platform, it is really a relay race with three separate runners: the ordering platform, the routing system that assigns the order to a florist, and the fulfillment florist who actually has to build and deliver it — often with only a few hours' notice and no relationship to the customer at all. Every handoff adds delay, miscommunication, and risk.
A local florist's version of same-day looks nothing like that. Order by 3 PM ET for same-day Manhattan delivery, and we make it and deliver it that same day; after 3 PM, call us and we'll check. One shop, one team, one arrangement, from the moment the phone rings to the moment it's placed in someone's hands.
Price Reality
Run the math on a $125 order and the gap becomes obvious:
- Wire service order: that $125 becomes roughly $35 to $50 in the hands of the florist who actually builds it, after commissions, service fees, delivery costs, and shipping charges are subtracted
- Local direct order: that same $125 stays with the shop that actually makes your arrangement, with delivery as a flat fee on top
Same customer, same $125, same intention — a dramatically different result sitting on the recipient's table. According to Business Insider's reporting on flower delivery services, florists have described wire companies pocketing up to 40% of a given order, leaving the fulfilling florist to cover flowers, vase, labor, and delivery out of what's left.
What You Actually Get from a Wire Service
Setting aside any single brand, this is the pattern across the industry:
- A photo online that may have no relationship to what actually gets delivered
- No real accountability when the arrangement disappoints — the platform points to the local florist, the local florist points back at the platform, and the customer is stuck in the middle
- Substitutions picked by a shop you never chose, working from a capped payout
- Customer service representatives reading from a script, with no way to actually reach the florist who built your arrangement
What You Get from Jerome Florists Directly
We built our business the opposite way, on purpose:
- We make your arrangement by hand, fresh to order, in the shop the same family has run since 1929
- The person who answers the phone at (212) 289-1677 is our team, not a call center reading a script
- If you don't like what we made, we make it right — because nearly a century of reputation is riding on every single delivery, not just the big ones
- If a flower is out of season, we substitute one of equal or greater value, and we never substitute another flower for an orchid
The Wire Service Myth: "But They Have More Selection"
This is the argument wire services rely on most, and it doesn't hold up. A wire service website shows a rotating catalog of maybe 20 to 40 stock arrangements at any given moment — the same handful of designs, photographed once, sold nationwide. A local florist works from whatever came in at the flower market that week: seasonal varieties, unusual color combinations, one-of-a-kind arrangements built for a specific person rather than pulled from a fixed template. Real selection lives at the local shop. The platform is just a catalog.
The Heritage Argument
We've been on the corner of 96th and Madison since May 1929. The business began on Jerome Avenue in the Bronx, started by William Peter Stamos, a Greek immigrant. Three generations of the Stamos family have run it ever since, guided by the belief that a flower shop should know its customers by name. Grandchildren of our original customers still call us today — some for the same kinds of arrangements their grandparents ordered decades ago. A wire service cannot carry that kind of weight, and it never will, because it isn't a shop. It's a call center with a checkout page. Jerome Florists is still, after nearly a century, exactly what it started as — a family shop with a name and a face behind every delivery.
